Peer Review of David's Essay WA2

Hi David,

After reading your essay, here are some comments that I have.

First paragraph, why the world is reexporing the concept of Nuclear power? I though Nuclear powers have been long used. Are you refering to create new ways to run Nuclear power safely?

Second paragraph, "More research in fuel performance and high temperature and corrosion resistant materials (like fiber-reinforced ceramics or composite materials, and zirconium-carbide fuel coatings.) is needed." Why you have 2 fullstop?

I am confused in your paragraph two. How many reactors are you talking about? Are you making a comparism of VHTR and SCWR?

Conculsion paragraph, is done well. You have made a clear stand to what to select.

In general, you have listed down those important points to support your argument. May I suggest that you should split 2 paragraph when comparing.

Thank you.

Peer Review of David's Essay

After reading David's essay, here are some comments that I wish to highlight.

Paragraph 3
Would you have evidences or sources to support " trees in forest help to store excess rainwater to precent soil erosion"?

Paragraph 4
Can I know how scrublands and grasslands regulates purify water? Are you refering to scrublands and grassland purify water?

Paragraph 5
Where did you get this information - "Research has shown that enzymes from some inserts can produce enzymes that can break down agricultural waste and the by-product can be use as a form of bio-fuel"? Is it from Turner, Oppenheimer & Wilcove, 2009, p.278? You did nt cite your origin.

Overall the eassay has full the requirement. There are grammars that require changes. Please look out.

DR Liong Shie-Yui

Hi! I am back with a new post! Today's topic is the lecture summary by Dr Liong Shie-Yui.

Dr Liong Shie-Yui is from Tropical Marine Science Institute, Singapore. His topic for the day is Climate Change & Modelling.

Dr Liong started with what climate change is and how climate forecasting should be done. Climate change is also known as global warming which is the heating of the earth. Heating of the earth is caused by the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmoshphere. The sunlight that enter the earth is unable to radiate out into the space. The greenhouse gas trapped the sunlight. Therefore, the trapped sunlight caused the earth to heat up year by year.

In his presentation, he shows data that the earth has been heating up since the start of Industrial Revolution in 1960. During Industrial Revolution, the increase release of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gas which form the increase greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere is increasing every year. The most harmful gas, Nitrous oxide, is 380 times more potent than CO2. Reports have all shown that Human are the culprit behind all the pollution.

Dr Liong showed us a graph from a report that reduction of carbon dioxide emission, there will not be a immediate change to the temperature and sea level. It takes time to stabilize.

After that, he went through the future climate look like. He used SRES Scenarios which are illustrated by IPCC to discuss the climate outlook. IPCC stands for Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change. The worst scenario is A1FI which is fossil intensive. The B1 scenario is the most ideal case. B1 scenario will be more environment friendly with the use of clean and resource efficient technologies.

He gave a short introduction on IPCC. It is a intergovernment body established in 1988. It is set up by World Meteorological Organisation and United Nations Environment Programme. They collect data with the help of climate models known as GCMs to monitor the climate changes. General Circulation Models (GCMs) are produced by developed countries eg. USA and Germany. The size of GCM models ranges from 150km x 150km to 600km x 600km, 30km into the atmosphere and 5km below ocean level. There are uncertainities in some regions simulated by different GCMs.

To reduce the uncertainties level, Regional Climate Model (RCM) is used to gather detailed and more accurate analysis of the climate condition for particular country eg. Singapore.

As Singapore is a small island, our weather is largely affected by our neighbouring countries. When plotting a RCM to study Singapore weather, we must take into consideration Vietnam. The wind in Singapore is affected by the flow in Vietnam.

Climate Change: Issues and Response

There is never too early or too late to do something. We should start brainstroming the theme on Climate Change: Issues and Response.

This is my personal feeling. Climate change is a big issues. It is not a 1 person effort but requires the whole world comes together hand in hand to swear that they will carry out environmental protection. There are countries who are hypocrite. They simply agreed to everything but did not carry out any promises. In additional, there are poor countries that is unable to implement measure set in UN Climate Change Conference. Moreover, these poor countries are usually under developed or very corrupted. Funding that are donated may not end up in the correct hands and were misused!

Hi

Hi Everybody,

This is my first time creating and using a blog! Please guide me along. I have lost touch with the technology world.

A short introduction about myself. This section will covers 3 main points that I wish to share.

Start with my education background. I completed GCE 'O' level at Dunearn Sec School in 2003. My GCE 'O' level certificate gave me the entrance ticket to Singapore Polytechnic. I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with Diploma in Mech Engineering and Specialist Diploma in CNC Application in 2007. Now, I am in National University of Singapore pursuing Bachelor of Engineering.

As for my personal life, I am still single at the moment due to my tight working schedule. I love travelling. Travelling allows me to widen my perspective in certain policy that are made.

The journey will continues. There is still many dreams waiting for me to fulfill.
